Hire Hopkins | July 2022

A Message From Our Directors

Dear reader,

Welcome to another edition of the Hire Hopkins newsletter – where we share data-driven best practices around hiring college talent. We’re happy to serve as your concierge for hiring and engaging students from JHU’s 9 different schools and academic divisions. In this edition, we want to start giving you a sneak peek of what’s coming up this fall.

  • Future Fest – our most comprehensive career fair this year yet with undergrad, grad, PhD and postdoc talent!
  • The DEI Collective – the 3rd run of our most successful diversity internship recruiting program

Scroll down to see dates and sign up links so you can stay posted!

In the meantime, here’s what we want to share: in the past months, Emma and I have been presenting at national conferences about the work we’re doing at JHU and what we’ve uncovered. In our experience and in looking at the data, there are some things we’ve noticed about traditional hiring practices and how they’re creating bias. We’ve started a series on our blog – and you can read our first post here: Inclusive Pay is the Inclusive Way: 5 reasons you should post salaries.

Warmly,

Alia Poonawala

Executive Director @ Hire Hopkins

Associate Director @ Hire Hopkins

We ran our internship hiring initiative, the DEI Collective, from fall through spring of last year, resulting in 125 summer internship offers extended.

But don’t just listen to us! What do the employers have to say?

86% of employers answered yes to “were you happy with the quality of DEI Collective applicants?”

Net Promoters Score: 69

  • The interns we hire are always of the top caliber and show great enthusiasm and interest in our work, so we are very appreciative of the partnership! The team at Hopkins over-communicates, which resonates with me beautifully, and makes it very clear what my responsibilities are as the partner with this program.”
  • “Great and very efficient opportunity for us to see a lot of strong and diverse candidates. Very well organized, high quality of candidates”
  • “The process was very organized. JHU staff are extremely friendly, responsive and deeply and genuinely care about DEI and you can feel that. The training was well put together, interactive and engaging. We have hired two students this summer from DEI and cannot wait for them to join us soon.

Get matched with students from diverse backgrounds who are looking for internships at companies like yours, and recruit for your summer 2023 internship cycle.

We only accept ~50 companies/year, so to be the FIRST to hear about our program launch dates, enter your email here.

*Confirmed DEI hire = first generation, limited income, black, hispanic, or international student (students with disabilities and LGBTQIA status are also considered DEI in our definition, however, those attributes are not disclosed in profiles, so we are unable to track that segment of our offers and hires.)
