Hire Hopkins | June 2022

A Message From Our Directors

Dear reader,

A few weeks ago, our classes of 2022 graduated to the words and wisdom of Samantha Power, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), who shared: “over the course of your life, the best way to grapple with uncertainty is to focus on a calling—not a career, a calling.”

In this sweet summer pause, we’re reflecting on those words, analyzing our impact this past academic year, and beginning to plan for the next one and what that entails for you.

What we’re excited about is this: our work and our calling is spilling out of Johns Hopkins, and we are being recognized as an industry leader. We presented a few weeks ago at the National Career Services Conference for NACE, with 14,000 members, in Portland, and additionally we were recognized by them for our work; the DEI Collective was one of two programs to receive an honorable mention for Chevron’s annual innovation award. (p12)  In May we were invited to, and presented at, RecruitCon 2022 in Denver – to share best practices for attracting and retaining the best workers on the market.

Here are some of the insights we’ve been presenting in each of these spaces

  • Where to begin when your goal is more diverse talent?
  • What high performing and inclusive job descriptions must include
  • How & why to use data to design and run hiring programs

We’re thrilled to be sharing this information and are looking forward to continuing our calling: being the most user-friendly and effective university recruiting partner companies have ever worked with, and achieving this through two highly interdependent and iterative aspects:

  • collecting, reporting, and forecasting student-employer outcomes data
  • developing and delivering easy, transparent, and effective hiring initiatives

We hope you enjoy the June edition of our newsletter.

Warmly,

Alia Poonawala

Asking candidates about the kind of value they expect in return for their time and effort is equally as important for them as it is for us. Being able to articulate the value exchange you’re looking for prepares both parties for a sustainable and fruitful employment relationship.”

“Recruiting over the past year in this virtual, ever-changing environment has presented me with the opportunity to be more creative in my outreach and engagement efforts with students. I tailor my communication to create a more personal connection with each student in an attempt to really understand their career goals and help them explore the best career opportunities for them at Gartner and beyond.”
