A Message From Our Director
Dear reader,
I very luckily found myself this year at the Paris Olympics.
Sitting on the Seine watching Hungarian swimmer Kristof Rasovszky push through the water for nearly 2 hours and then take the Gold. Delighting at B-girl finalists Ami (Japan) and Nicka (Lithuania) dance up a storm and then celebrate each other in this year’s first breakdancing competition. And, being moved to tears as Indonesian Rizki Juniansyah made a world record in weightlifting.
What is stunning about all of these experiences (and as you all may have seen, too) is the audacity of the athletes- daring to attempt (and succeed, and fail, with grace) at such intense, difficult, impossible-seeming feats!
When it has felt like the world is in such a dire place, it was reinvigorating to see people from so many countries come together and cheer for one another in unity, kindness, and sportship.
So basically, I spent most of the Olympics crying 😂
Mostly it’s been a real master class in the way we show up: our attitude and how we handle the moment: whether it goes the way we expected, or doesn’t.
Speaking of how we show up, given that Fall hiring season is among us, our new staff writer Daniela Valdes (please welcome her to the Hire Hopkins team!) talks about what a company can do to appeal to students if they don’t have the name brand to initially attract interest. Is it true that most students we survey are interested in working for the name brands (e.g. Goldman Sachs, Amazon, BCG…)? Well, yes. But it’s also true that they’re very drawn to this one thing (and it’s something you can control.)
- Future Fest is our biggest hiring event of the year! Over 2,000 students — undergrads, masters, and PhDs — in attendance. Take a look at in-person and virtual options!
- We’re bringing together Carey MBA students with industry leaders, alum, and you at the Corporate Networking Breakfast. Show interest today…Don’t wait until December!
- Looking to Hire SAIS and other JHU grad students? Claim your spot at the JHU SAIS U.S. Government and National Security Career Fair!
- Now’s your chance to connect with over 2,000 Public Health graduate students! Join the JHU Bloomberg School of Health for an in-person Career Connection Day.
What we’re up to
- $40,000 to SAIS winners in 3rd annual Walmart Global Policy Challenge (tackling trade, tech, sustainability, data, energy, DEI and more)
- Our SAIS students visited companies (Tesla, Meta, Netflix, the European Union Office in San Francisco, and more!) to explore careers in tech and energy.
P.S.
Last year, Emma O’Rourke-Powell and I had the pleasure of speaking at SXSW EDU. Though we took a break from speaking engagements, we’re back with our talk! And it’s called “Silicon Valley Meets Ivory Tower: Bridging Work & Higher Ed”.
Take 30 seconds to vote for us to speak on the upcoming panel! Your votes count for 30% of whether or not SXSW accepts our proposal.
Until next month,
Alia Poonawala
