HOUR DREAMS
DREAMS Fall 2024 showcases research, scholarly, and creative work

DREAMS Fall 2024, held October 21 – 25, 2024, showcased 98 presentations of research, scholarly, and creative works by 95 JHU undergraduate students. Over the week, 372 visitors, comprised of faculty and staff mentors, research and academic colleagues, classmates, family, and friends of presenters, attended 196 live talks and engaged with online presentation materials consisting of posters, slides, and recorded talks.

The virtual platform hosting the event enabled visitors from JHU and worldwide to attend at their convenience, dramatically increasing access* to these students’ work compared with typical short-term, in-person events. Visitors commended the breadth and depth of student work and the high quality of their online presentation materials and live talks. They initiated thoughtful discussions in comment threads at each online presentation wall.

Presentations spanned various academic disciplines and boasted support from various JHU departments and programs, including ILLD partners such as LDL, GEO, and UEL. While the live talks are over, presentations are still up, and you are welcome to visit and comment on the work of our outstanding undergraduates!

*A typical in-person poster session (at a professional conference, for example) requires a student presenter to bear the expense of attending the event and printing a poster, the logistics, and the cost of travel, and then standing in a crowded room for 1-3 hours, hoping for a visitor. Typically, their mentor, colleagues, classmates, friends, and family cannot attend, and on average, each presenter speaks to only one (more precisely, 0.3) interested visitor to the session. The week-long, virtual DREAMS event presents no financial cost to the presenter, allows them to choose their live talk dates/times to meet the needs of their audience, and has yielded an average of 3.8 unique visitors to their presentation walls and talks.
