A Message From Our Director

Dear reader,

When I was in college I thought I wanted to be a neurosurgeon. So I studied biology (and directing, secretly lest my parents find out!). After taking the MCAT and shadowing neurosurgeons at UPitt, I realized whose dream it really was… but it was too late to change majors.

My first boss was able to think beyond my biology degree when so many others wouldn’t. And he gave me the chance to learn everything I could at the startup we were running. It was stressful, but I learned all about sales and marketing and LOVED it. I liked the thrill of hitting sales goals, learning about our global clients, and the collaborative storytelling/data-gathering it took to raise a seed round.

No one would have known looking at my biology degree that I was a skilled public speaker, had raised thousands of dollars for an affordable housing non-profit, and was a university EMS responder.

All that to say, focusing on a major as a guideline to gauge a student’s skills is certainly understandable, but it’s really just a starting point. More here.
