This summer provided a unique and enriching blend of experiences that spanned clinical observation, academic advancement, tutoring, and military medicine. I had the opportunity to observe surgeries with a vascular and a general surgeon, participate in summer classes, tutor students, and work with the Maryland National Guard’s medical officers. Each aspect of this experience not only broadened my understanding of the medical field but also highlighted the intricate dynamics of military medicine. Here’s a detailed look at how these diverse experiences shaped my growth and professional aspirations
A significant highlight of my internship was my Observership with Dr. Hasan Hashemi and Dr. Joyce Boateng. Under Dr. Hashemi, I observed complex vascular surgeries, gaining insights into the precision and expertise required for such procedures. Similarly, working with Dr. Boateng allowed me to witness a variety of general surgeries, showcasing the versatility needed in general surgery and deepening my appreciation for surgical practices. In addition to my clinical experiences, I took an organic chemistry summer class. Balancing coursework with my internship responsibilities was demanding but rewarding, and tutoring students in Algebra II further enhanced my communication skills. A notable addition to my summer was my involvement with the Maryland National Guard. Working closely with medical officers, I gained valuable insights into military medicine. This experience involved shadowing medical officers, participating in briefings, and understanding the protocols and challenges unique to military healthcare. The exposure to military medical operations broadened my perspective on how healthcare is delivered in diverse settings, highlighting the importance of adaptability and precision in medical practice
Over the summer, I developed a diverse set of skills crucial for both my academic and professional development. Watching surgeries helped me grasp the intricacies of procedures and patient welfare. My academic coursework and tutoring responsibilities boosted my knowledge and communication abilities. Teaching concepts to students deepened my comprehension and honed my skill in presenting information clearly.
Working with the Maryland National Guard gave me an outlook on military healthcare I learned about the logistical and operational aspects of providing healthcare in a military context, which included understanding military protocols, emergency response procedures, and the integration of medical care within military operations. This experience improved my adaptability and reinforced the importance of precision and teamwork in high-stakes environments.
Balancing these responsibilities—clinical observations, summer classes, tutoring, and military medicine—required me to refine my time management skills. I learned to prioritize effectively and manage my time efficiently to meet various deadlines and commitments, enhancing my organizational abilities. This summer taught me valuable lessons about balancing multiple roles and responsibilities. Additionally, the experience made me realize the significance of communication and empathy. These skills are crucial in both civilian and military medical settings. The skills and insights gained from this summer will be instrumental in my future career and academic pursuits. Enhanced time management and organizational skills will help me balance future responsibilities more effectively. My exposure to both civilian and military medical environments has solidified my aspiration to pursue a career in healthcare, with a particular interest in understanding the diverse contexts in which medical care is delivered. The lessons learned from tutoring, academic coursework, and military medicine will continue to inform my approach to teaching, mentorship, and healthcare practice.
