One of the most powerful leverage points we have is access to resources. So many of our resources are tied up through organizations, non-profits, government, and universities. Here at Johns Hopkins, the Imagine Center brings together a dynamic outfit of staff, implementing some wild and groundbreaking practices around Life Design and career development.
So much synergy is supported inside the Imagine Cetner building. A crystal ball of career magic? Maybe. But what if I told you that we ALL have an Imagine Center, right in your neighborhood? The public library holds rows of books, quiet study rooms, the portal to the internet! But what if, instead of just a place to borrow books, the library is actually the heart of creativity, connection, and career possibility?
Think about it: libraries already have so much of what we need to dream, build, and learn. There are workstations for collaboration, endless resources for research, and free internet access. Some libraries even lend out unexpected items, like snowshoes in rural Iowa or sewing machines in city branches. The library is a place where curiosity is welcome, and exploration is encouraged.
But what about expertise? At first glance, it might seem like the only thing missing is a team of industry experts or career advisors, like those you’d find at a JHU. Yet, if you look closer, you’ll realize that librarians are expert way finders. They know where to find the right information, connect you to industry leaders, and help tool you with the right questions. Their superpower is guiding you to the resources and language you need to unlock new worlds.
Still, sometimes we crave a personal advisor—someone to walk alongside us as we navigate new challenges. Universities often provide these mentors, both in person and online. But what if we broadened our definition of “advisor”? What if we looked beyond the walls of academia, professional settings, and into our own neighborhoods?
Our neighbors are some of the best experts we’ll ever meet, and really, they are so close. The executive assistant down the street has watched high-stakes negotiations unfold. The volunteer at the senior center has learned accounting by managing real budgets. The city bus driver knows the ins and outs of our travel patterns, and likely some of the most meaningful health resources and community needs. Expertise is everywhere, woven into the fabric of our daily lives.
So, what if the true network you’re searching for isn’t hidden behind a university login or a corporate badge? What if it’s right here—in the library, in your neighborhood, in the stories and skills of the people around you? When we step beyond our front porch and into the shared spaces of our community, we discover that the Life Design Lab and its Imagine Center aren’t a building or a program. They embody a mindset. It’s the willingness to connect, to ask, to share, and to learn from one another.
Imagine what’s possible when you see the library, not just as a place for books, but as the launchpad for your next big idea. The Imagine Center isn’t something we wait for someone else to build. It’s something we create together.
