The Finance Pathway helps Johns Hopkins undergraduates explore careers in investment banking, corporate finance, commercial banking, asset and wealth management, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), consulting, insurance, fintech, quantitative finance, venture capital, private equity, and other finance-related fields.
Whether you are interested in Wall Street, corporate finance, fintech, nonprofit finance, healthcare finance, or wondering how your major connects to the financial industry, this pathway provides a place to begin and a structure to move forward.
Through programs, coaching, alumni connections, employer events, and pathway-specific resources, you can explore your options, build relevant skills, and prepare for internships, jobs, and meaningful careers in finance.
Industry Overview
The finance industry is made up of organizations and institutions that provide financial services and support the flow of money throughout the economy. It plays a vital role in maintaining economic stability and helping businesses, governments, nonprofit organizations, and individuals achieve their financial goals.
The industry includes a wide range of sectors, including investment banking, commercial banking, corporate finance, investment management, insurance, real estate, venture capital, private equity, financial technology (fintech), and wealth management.
While many people associate finance with Wall Street, the industry extends far beyond it. Whether a company is launching a new product, a nonprofit is expanding its services, a hospital is building a new facility, a government agency is managing public resources, or a startup is raising capital, finance professionals help organizations allocate resources, manage risk, evaluate investments, and create long-term value.
Wall Street is one path—but it is not the only path. The Finance Pathway is designed to help you understand the breadth of opportunities within the industry and identify the roles, organizations, and work environments that align with your skills, interests, values, and goals.
Who This Pathway Is For
This pathway is for any Hopkins undergraduate interested in finance, whether you have already identified finance as your career goal or are just beginning to explore the field.
You may be a strong fit for this pathway if you are:
Studying economics, business, mathematics, statistics, accounting, finance, engineering, computer science, or another quantitative field.
These majors often connect directly to careers in banking, investments, corporate finance, consulting, financial analytics, fintech, and quantitative finance.
Coming from another academic background.
Finance organizations recruit students from public health, political science, international studies, psychology, history, the humanities, and many other disciplines. Employers value students who bring diverse perspectives, strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and a willingness to learn.
Curious but unsure where to start.
You do not need to know whether you want to work in investment banking, corporate finance, wealth management, consulting, or fintech to begin. Attending a pathway event, connecting with an alum, learning financial terminology, or joining a finance student organization can all be meaningful first steps.
Navigating your path with different access points or constraints.
First-generation, limited-income, international, transfer, student-athlete, and other students may enter the pathway at different moments and with different needs. The Finance Pathway is designed to offer flexible entry points, practical guidance, and support that meets you where you are.

Explore, Prepare, Launch: Your Roadmap
You do not have to follow one perfect timeline to pursue finance. Students enter this pathway at different points, and your next step may depend on your class year, major, prior experience, and career interests. The pathway can help you move forward by stage:
Explore: Learn how finance shapes organizations, markets, and the global economy. Explore the major sectors within finance, attend pathway events, join finance student organizations, build your understanding of financial terminology, and connect with alumni to learn about different career paths. This stage is especially useful for first-year students, sophomores, transfer students, and anyone still deciding where they want to focus.
Prepare: Build the knowledge, skills, experiences, materials, and relationships that make you a stronger candidate. This may include developing technical skills in Excel and financial modeling, strengthening your resume and LinkedIn profile, participating in case competitions, gaining research or leadership experience, networking with alumni and employers, and preparing for technical and behavioral interviews. This stage is especially important for sophomores and juniors preparing for internship recruiting, but students can begin preparing at any point.
Launch: Take action on internship or full-time recruiting. Engage with employers, apply early, prepare for interviews, seek referrals, connect with alumni, evaluate offers, and build a strategy for your transition from Hopkins to your next opportunity. This stage is especially relevant for juniors pursuing primary internship recruiting and seniors pursuing full-time roles.

Alumni can help you better understand what finance work looks like, how different sectors and roles compare, and what choices helped them move from Hopkins into their careers.

The Finance Pathway helps students engage with employers across investment banking, commercial banking, corporate finance, asset management, wealth management, consulting, insurance, fintech, venture capital, private equity, and other finance-related sectors.
Employer events may include information sessions, coffee chats, networking events, technical preparation programs, career fairs, industry panels, resume reviews, and recruiting opportunities.
