Summer Scholarship & Development Program
Internships and other immersive summer experiences are invaluable opportunities to prototype future pathways, build meaningful skills, and connect with industry professionals. Every student should reap the benefits of internships, regardless of their financial status. The Life Design Lab is pleased to offer scholarships to Johns Hopkins University undergraduates for unpaid and underpaid internships and immersive experiences. Applications are typically available mid-Spring Semester. Recipients of the Summer Scholarship will be enrolled in a 1-credit, zero tuition, course designed to enhance your summer experience and career readiness skills.

Life Design Summer Experience Practicum
The Life Design Summer Experience Practicum (LDSEP) provides students with a structured opportunity to apply Life Design to a summer immersive experience. Over the course of 8-weeks, students will use the principles and processes of design thinking to reflect upon their values, identities, habits, and experiences and their relationship to the world of work; to deepen their understanding of potential professional pathways through conversations with colleagues, supervisors, and alumni; and, to test out these pathways through storytelling and the designing of new habits. By the end of the course, students will be able to articulate the ways in which their summer experience informs and supports their academic, professional, and personal ambitions.
Student recipients of the Life Design Summer Scholarship are automatically enrolled in a virtual 1-credit course.

Additional Campus Opportunities:
CIIP
The Community Impact Internships Program is a competitive, paid summer internship, that pairs JHU undergraduate students with nonprofit organizations and government agencies, and offers an intensive, cohort-based learning environment. Internships focus on community-identified projects in Baltimore and run from June to August.
The main goals of the program are:
- to give undergraduate students an opportunity to gain real-world experience while being directly involved in the Baltimore City community
- to support local nonprofits, community groups, and government agencies in achieving their missions
PURA
PURA is the Provost’s Undergraduate Research Award. Provost Joseph Cooper (1991-1995) established the PURA program in 1993 with a generous endowment by the Hodson Trust. The program was created to support and encourage Hopkins undergraduate students to engage in independent research, scholarly and creative projects.
Professionalism Matters: What to Know Before You Cancel or Accept an Opportunity
Whether you’re signing up for a coffee chat or navigating a job offer, your actions reflect on you—and on Hopkins. Before scheduling (or canceling!) anything, take a moment to review the expectations below. These guidelines will help you build strong professional relationships, protect your reputation, and get the support you need from the Life Design Lab.
Cancellation of On-Campus Interviews or Coffee Chats: We ask that all students attend any coffee chats or on-campus interview they sign-up for. If you are no longer interested or able to attend, please contact the Life Design Lab at least two business days before your scheduled meeting. If you are interviewing with an employer, you should also address the email to them.
A cancellation less than two business days before your scheduled meeting, or failure to attend, will be considered a no-show in which students will be asked to visit with a Life Design Educator (LDE) within 2 weeks. Student’s Handshake account and future participation in coffee chats may be suspended if they fail to meet with an LDE. Email assigned Life Design Educator directly or lifedesignlabhomewood@jhu.edu to make an appointment.
Employer Partner Disclosure:
Please note that if you apply to any role through Handshake, the employer can disclose information regarding your hiring status.
Johns Hopkins University believes students should be able to explore the options open to them to make responsible and well-informed decisions about employment offers. We want you to obtain the best opportunity for your needs, interests, and professional path.
For this reason, we are asking employers to provide a reasonable time for students to make their decision: 2 weeks from an offer letter being extended.
We ask all students to be considerate in their reply to employers and meet with a Life Design Educator to discuss your options if you are feeling pressure to make a decision before you are ready. Once you accept an offer in writing, you have entered into a contractual agreement. Due to this, it is expected that you will stop looking for other opportunities and abide by the signed contract. If unforeseen circumstances arise, we highly encourage you to meet with your LDE so they can support you through these challenges.
Students who renege on an offer will be asked to meet with a Life Design Educator within 2 weeks. Student’s Handshake account and future participation in future high-impact programming, like Career Treks, may be suspended if they fail to meet with an LDE. Email assigned Life Design Educator directly or lifedesignlabhomewood@jhu.edu to make an appointment.
