About the Office of Councilmember Adrin Nazarian

The Office of Councilmember Adrin Nazarian represents the Second Council District of Los Angeles. Our office is committed to providing essential municipal services and maintaining a direct, responsive presence across the diverse neighborhoods of the San Fernando Valley. This program offers students a comprehensive look at the daily operations required to run a major metropolitan district office.

The Opportunity

The Council District 2 Internship is a highly interactive, forward-facing role limited to a strict 6-month term with an option to extend. This position is designed for students seeking direct, hands-on experience in municipal governance and community relations.

Unlike traditional sedentary roles, this internship requires an active presence in the field, physical engagement at public events, and constant, direct communication with constituents.

Core Responsibilities

Interns will be assigned specific, action-oriented tasks across the following operational areas:

THE PRIMARY FOCUS: DOOR-TO-DOOR CONSTITUENT ENGAGEMENT

  • The absolute core and largest part of this internship is direct, face-to-face communication with constituents via door knocking. Interns are required to participate in neighborhood field walks and community canvassing two (2) times per week.
  • During these walks, your highest priority is to speak directly to constituents at their doorsteps. You must possess the comfort, enthusiasm, and strong verbal communication skills necessary to break the ice, engage residents, listen to their concerns, distribute official public service materials, and assess localized infrastructure needs first-hand.

EVENT LOGISTICS & COMMUNITY PRESENCE (FIELD WORK)

  • Hands-on Physical Labor: Interns must assist with the operational execution of city-sponsored community events. This involves mandatory physical labor, including the layout, setup, and heavy breakdown of event equipment such as tents, tables, and signage in varying weather conditions.
  • Public Outreach & Verbal Engagement: You will staff informational resource tables at public forums and fairs. You are expected to actively speak to constituents at these events, represent the Council Office with diplomacy, answer public inquiries, and distribute vital city resources directly.

OFFICE CASEWORK & TELEPHONE INTAKE (IN-OFFICE WORK)

  • Telephone Intake: Serve as the primary point of contact for the district office by managing high-volume incoming phone calls and greeting walk-in visitors with clarity and professionalism.
  • Casework Logging & Data Tracking: Translate your door-knocking field observations and telephone inquiries into actionable city solutions. You will perform office casework by logging formal service requests into the MyLA311 platform and routing them directly to appropriate city departments.
  • Administrative Support: Perform data entry, message taking, and other administrative tasks as assigned by staff.

Candidate Qualifications

  • A demonstrable interest in public policy, local government, public administration, and the San Fernando Valley community.
  • Strong verbal communication skills tailored for high-volume public interaction (both telephone intake and face-to-face field assignments).
  • Comfort working in a dynamic environment that transitions between stationary office administration and active, outdoor field assignments.
  • Physical capability to assist with the setup and breakdown of event equipment in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to contribute 10-15 hours minimum weekly.

Professional Benefits

  • Direct professional exposure to City department leadership, community stakeholders, and local policy-makers.
  • Coordination with university advisors to fulfill institutional requirements for course credit.
