Eduardo Martínez-Montes is a creative problem solver, scientist, writer, and speaker. He was born and raised in San Juan Puerto Rico where he also received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras (UPR-RP). During this time he conducted research in molecular biology, neuroscience, and proteomics at UPR-RP, Rutgers, and Stanford. After graduating he enrolled in the BCMB PhD program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he has focused his research on cancer genetics. For his thesis he is uncovering the epigenetic drivers of cancer in the context of acute myeloid leukemia using his lab’s innovative mathematical models of DNA methylation. He has written for ASBMB Today, Bloomberg American Health Initiative, and the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Odyssey. He was also selected to participate in the Commercialization Academy at Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures where he developed skills in technology transfer, commercialization, and venture creation in the biotechnology space. Since then, he has consulted for venture capital firms in the Baltimore area hoping to continue to translate scientific research into technologies that benefit patients. Ultimately, he hopes to return to Puerto Rico and foster biomedical research in developing technologies that meet patient needs and benefit the island’s economy.

Eduardo is happiest playing any sport, visiting breweries, or dancing salsa with his wife, Marly. He also enjoys leading worship and preaching at his church in Baltimore.
