What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners (commonly shortened to NPs) are healthcare professionals who have previous experience as a registered nurse and who additionally have an advanced practical nursing license in order to conduct many of the healthcare services that physicians do. NPs have the ability to autonomously diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, conduct patient exams, and treat patients. They can work with patients across all age groups and can choose an area of specialty such as family, psychiatry, anesthesiology, gerontology, and more.
