For alumni of Johns Hopkins University, mentoring current students offers a unique and valuable opportunity to stay connected with their alma mater while giving back to the next generation. By sharing their expertise and experiences, alumni not only foster the professional and personal growth of students but also experience a profound sense of fulfillment. This engagement helps alumni maintain a strong link to the university, expands their professional networks, and enhances their leadership and interpersonal skills. Additionally, mentoring provides fresh perspectives on emerging trends and contributes to a lasting legacy of support and excellence within the Johns Hopkins community.
What is OneHop Mentoring?
OneHop Mentoring is an easy-to-use platform that will allow you to build connections with JHU students.
How do alumni join OneHop Mentoring?
Register with your preferred method of LinkedIn (which will auto-fill some of your information) or select the email option and use an email account (that you will always have access to). All alumni must be verified before gaining access to the communication platform upon completion of registration. However, even if you are alumni all current Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, and students need to use their JHU email account during sign-up so that any additional logins will require the JHU Login option.
After signing up what can I expect?
As you await your connections, check out the Discussion tab. Here you can pose questions to community members and see how they respond!
You can also join any groups that are open to Alumni participation.
How do I get started?
1. Go to OneHop or click the button below.
2. Click “Join Our Community!”
3.. Sign in using your preferred email address or connect using your LinkedIn account.
4. Start exploring, asking questions, sharing feedback, and more!
How can I help a student narrow down their career path options or find their place post-graduation?
You do not have to be an expert regarding everything. Simply be transparent about your experience, share what you’ve learned, and have a willingness to help. Mentorship and networking doesn’t have to be scary, time-consuming, or overwhelming. Simply be who you needed as a student as you give back your time and talent in this unique way.
- Help your mentee set achievable goals that feel meaningful to them
- ‘Show and tell’ specific examples from your own experience
- Don’t be afraid to role play challenging conversations or situations your mentee may be facing
- Refer them to additional resources such as on-campus services that can be found under the Resources tab
How many mentees do mentors work with?
Mentors can take any number of mentees they are interested in working with. Mentees usually only have one structured mentorship relationship going on at a time but multiple flash mentorship relationships can occur. Upon sign-up you have the flexibility of choosing how often you are contacted, how you are contacted, and what you are willing to help with. These options can be updated at any time via account settings to reflect your changing availability. The most important thing is that you do what feels right for you.
I just graduated so would I make a good mentor?
Absolutely! Your recent experience as a student gives you insight on current events and experiences that some of our more experienced mentors may not have. Your shared experiences and willingness to be transparent would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
What if my mentee asks me questions I don’t know the answer to or if I don’t know how to pose a question to a mentor?
That’s completely fine. As a mentor, your job isn’t to know all the answers. It’s to help your mentee find the answers they need. You can consult your mentor resources and email the onehopmentoring@jhu.edu if you get stuck.
What if I have a serious concern about my mentee’s physical or mental health?
We take concerns like these very seriously and ask that you contact us immediately. Once you let us know about a serious concern, we send your concern to a point person at Johns Hopkins who can reach out to your mentee and provide extra resources and support. Contact: Hopkins Connect staff by email at onehopmentoring@jhu.edu. Or contact Johns Hopkins University directly if you have concerns for a student and feel like they could use support to navigate resources, please refer them to Student Outreach and Support. You can also refer a student by filling out our referral form online or by calling Student Outreach and Support at 410-516-7857.
