What is Speech Language Pathology?

Speech-Language Pathology is a field that focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of communication disorders, cognitive-communication disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders. Additionally, the field includes aural rehabilitation for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, augmentative and alternative communication systems for individuals with severe expressive and/or language comprehension disorders, and aid for those who wish to learn how to communicate more effectively.

Education Requirements for Practice

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders or a related major
  • Graduate degree (program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation)

Certifications & Licenses

  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP)
  • Teaching Certificate (to practice within a school setting)
  • License (each state has its own set of requirements)

Advanced Degree Requirements

  • Supervised clinical experience
  • Clinical Fellowship
  • Passing Praxis exam scores
