PHutures – Doctoral Fellows Program »

Rachel Waxman, Ph.D.

I applied for a PHutures fellowship for two reasons. First, because I’m passionate about changing the culture in humanities departments when it comes to career outcomes.

I wanted to help not only destigmatize non-academic careers for humanities PhDs, but to show other graduate students that a non-academic career can be just as exciting and fulfilling as an academic one.

Second, I wanted to develop skills and work on projects that I believed would help me make the transition into the private sector. As a PHutures fellow, I provided support on a number of initiatives, from writing blog posts and uploading and organizing content on YouTube, to brainstorming new professional development workshops.

My major accomplishment, however, was developing and implementing a workshop series to introduce Humanities PhDs to the field of consulting.

If you’re excited about helping graduate students explore a diverse set of careers—and you want to hone your own professional skills in the process—I can’t recommend a PHutures fellowship enough!
