A Message From Our Director

Dear reader,

I’ve spent this summer living in a studio apartment in a charming old building with big airy windows. While I embraced my minimalist lifestyle, one major annoyance was the door.

It took a whole minute to wrestle with the key and lock, making every entrance and exit a daily ordeal.

When my sister came to visit, I gave her the spiel – warning it would be hard, she’d have to be patient, etc. but to my surprise, when we arrived that evening, she turned the lock and it unclicked – smooth as butter.

In all my feelings – I hadn’t noticed there was a completely separate lock that I could have been using the whole time.

There’s that quote “we do not see things as they are, but as we are ourselves.” This experience made me wonder how many opportunities I’m missing out on because of my well-worn “reality.”

In that light, we’ve relaunched the DEI Collective 4.0. The program has evolved – it’s a mix of training, community, and has an anti-racism + gender equality inventory (inspired by the work of Roderick Lewis) that will help your organization take concrete steps to being more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Think of it as a way to evaluate your company from a different lens. We’re so excited to share it with you and you can learn more about it here.

Warmly,

Alia Poonawala
