Hire Hopkins | March 2024

A Message From Our Director

Dear reader,

Last week I was sharing my professional roadblocks with my mentor over dinner. We were eating sashimi tacos and a big bowl of melted cheese (tasted way better than it sounds) and brainstorming what the future could look like for hiring + recruiting from higher ed.
When I shared my vision (which includes student programming based on employer feedback and outcomes data), the key we realized, was being able to collaborate with different types of personalities. She gave me a fun + quick (non-scientific) personality test – the four-bird (DOPE) model.

It’s apparently similar to the DISC method, but a little more relatable since we compare ourselves to birds rather than abstract personality adjectives.

They are…dove, owl, peacock, and eagle.

Adam Grant, professor at Wharton and author, shares that when it comes to team sports 2 stars on the court are more effective than 4. In a Ted Talk he profiles Shane Battier as the “No-Stats All-Star.” Every team he played on would win more when he was around! What a dream team member.

So what bird are you? A peacock, dove, eagle, or owl? And how can you leverage that with the strengths (or bird profiles) of your colleagues? You can find the link to the test and the Ted talk here.

Warmly,

Alia

P.S. There are lots of recruiting events to partake in and deadlines coming up this week – scroll down for the details. You don’t want to miss out 🙂
