Hire Hopkins | February 2024

A Message From Our Director

Dear reader,

A tough personal situation the last few months led me to a wonderful author who changed my outlook on challenges.

Susan Piver explains in one of her books that the way to work through emotional pain is to make space for what’s there. Rather than trying to sugar-coat it, fix it, change it, you sit with it.

At first, my type-A, attack-the-problem-with-a-solution personality was thrown for a loop.

But if I’m being honest, the prospect of accepting my feelings and carving out time and space for them without trying to fix them was… freeing.

We speak to a lot of organizations who want to compete with the big name brands that students really want to work for. But not everyone can have that place in a student’s brain. So here’s what I propose: assert your value in other ways.

If we know anything about Gen Z, we know that they care about transparency and authenticity. Organizations that know themselves and where they want to go can appeal to students who are “values-driven” as Deloitte shares in their 2023 Gen Z & Millenial Survey.

And sometimes that means, owning, (and sitting with) where your organization is currently at. That doesn’t mean it can’t improve. That doesn’t mean it can’t do things better. But for things to improve, you’ve got to sit with the reality of where things are.

So far, 20 hiring partners have completed an anti-racism and gender equality inventory through our program, the DEI Collective. As a result, they’re recruiting students who value that kind of organizational transparency and self-reflection.

And we’ve got some new events to share (more below)

See you next month.
